Build a stall for the stolen oxen
Proverb explanation
It is too late to build the ox stall after oxen have been stolen
Meaning
It is too late to take preventive measures once the damage has been done
Culture
This proverb shows that Thai people used oxen for agricultural work and some were stolen in the countryside. Some people tied up oxen with ropes to their house pillars, so that they could hear the sound of thieves coming at night, as so many thieves were stealing oxen; however, some people’s oxen were still stolen, so they built ox-stalls to prevent this problem (Chantalakkhana et al., 2015, pp. 105-106). Since oxen helped Thai people with agricultural and manual work in the past, Thai people regarded oxen as valuable animals (Mahamontree, 2015, p. 174).

It is too late to shut the stable door after the horse has bolted

It is too late to close or lock the stable door after the horse has galloped away
Meaning

Culture
This proverb shows that horses were important animals for people living in the past. British people used horses for the farm work and agriculture (Long, 1963, pp. 15-18). Moreover, people used horses for transportation called “carriages”, and horses were expensive to own (Mitchell, 1996). Even nowadays, some British people still ride horses, and horseracing is also one of spectator sport in England. So, this proverb reflects the way of life of people in England.
